Orran’s heart broke for Blake. He could tell how much being rejected by his own family had hurt Blake. It was obvious in every single word he said, in the way he looked away from Orran as if ashamed.

There was nothing to be ashamed of. Orran wasn’t sure that saying that out loud would help, but he wanted to try. “Dragons aren’t gay like you said,” he started.

Blake bit his lower lip. “Does it mean that all dragons like the other sex?”

Orran shook his head. “That’s not what I was trying to say. It’s hard to explain, though.”

“Try me. I know I’m only human, but it doesn’t mean I’m stupid.”

There was no heat in Blake’s words, but Orran was offended on his behalf. “I never said you were stupid, and I don’t think you are. But it’s obvious that humans think differently than dragons. You talk about gay and—and this kind of thing as if people can choose.”

“It’s not, but most humans are straight, which means they like the opposite sex. Then, there’s a small percentage of us who like the same sex, the opposite sex and the same sex, or who just don’t like having that kind of relationship. It’s complicated.”

Orran chuckled. “I suppose it is, and dragons are simpler in a way. We don’t care about what the other dragon’s sex is. We fall in love with dragons without wondering what’s between their legs.”

Orran didn’t miss the way Blake’s gaze shifted to his groin. He wasn’t ashamed. Now he knew he was different from Blake, and he understood why Blake was fascinated. He was, too, although he didn’t have an easy task looking, since Blake was covered by clothes.

“You mean you’re all pansexual?”

“I don’t understand what that word means.”

“It’s when you like the person inside. Like, you don’t care about the outside, about the body. You fall in love with the person they are.”

“I think that’s it, yes.”

“So you could fall in love with a male dragon? You wouldn’t mind that?”

Orran shook his head. “Of course not.”

“What about humans? Do you think you could fall in love with a human?”

That was the question, wasn’t it? Orran was pretty sure he was already falling in love with a human, but could he say it out loud? He didn’t want to ignore that possibility, not when Blake was asking. He also wasn’t sure he could give Blake hope, though. He didn’t know what would happen to Blake once they got to the palace. The queen might have agreed to have him stay with them, but would it only be for a few days or for a longer time? Could they actually have something?

Orran cleared his throat. “I don’t see why not.”

“Maybe because dragons hate humans? And I actually agree with that. Most humans are dicks.”

Orran barked out a laugh. “You aren’t wrong. The only humans I’ve met before you were bad people. But you’re not. I suppose that if that hypothetical human man was like you, I could fall in love with him.
